Tabletop games have long been a source of joy and bonding for families and friends. However, their packaging has often been unattractive and inconvenient, leading to games being hidden away and forgotten. Mr. Pip's Double Cross Packaging aims to change this narrative. Inspired by the need to create a curious and intriguing sculpture that never needs to be put away, the packaging houses a unique dice game that is designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The packaging's unique properties set it apart from traditional game boxes. It is environmentally friendly, made from paper pulp, and assembled using rubber bands. This allows the product to be accessed without damaging the packaging. The shape of the packaging allows for secure stacking, tessellating to conserve shelf and shipping space by 29% over a traditional box. This innovative design not only saves space but also reduces the product's carbon footprint.
The packaging is realized using two white molded dry pulp halves to house and protect the product. The brand logo is molded into the top pulp, with a paper sleeve that wraps around one of the tessellating legs for product information, and to indicate the product color. Four white flat rubber bands lay flush in the grooves and hold the packaging together, allowing the product to be accessed in-store without damaging the packaging.
The design process was not without its challenges. The team had to figure out a way to hold the two pulp halves together while maintaining environmental values and allowing shoppers to view and remove the product without damage to the packaging. After thoughtful investigation, they decided upon the solution to use rubber bands. This allows the user to easily take the product out of the box to view and touch the product, enhancing purchasing confidence.
The packaging for Mr. Pip's Double Cross was designed to showcase the unique and iconic form of this new and wildly fun tabletop game. With a game made to be displayed as modern decor, molded packaging was developed from environmentally friendly paper pulp, to showcase the game's design. This also allows the packaging to be stacked with multiple units tessellating, dramatically conserving shelf and shipping space.
In conclusion, Mr. Pip's Double Cross Packaging is a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming everyday items. Its unique, eco-friendly design not only enhances the gaming experience but also contributes to environmental sustainability. This design is a winner of the prestigious Platinum A' Packaging Design Award in 2017, a testament to its world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative design that contributes to societal wellbeing.
